She grew up in Duvachelle, Banks Peninsula and attended Christchurch Girls’ High School.〔 Lough’s early aspiration was to be a writer; one of her poems was included in the 1930 anthology of New Zealand poetry ''Kowhai Gold''. In the early 1930s Lough spent three years in France working as a governess in order to learn French.
